Dual-prong wired headphones remain the standard equipment on the vast majority of commercial airline fleets worldwide
As more and more new aircraft are equipped with in-cabin Bluetooth entertainment systems, many people have raised a question: Are cabin wired headphones on the verge of being phased out?
The reality is quite the opposite. Aviation dual-prong wired headphones remain the standard equipment for the vast majority of airline fleets worldwide. They are in high demand in economy class, charter flights, old and modified aircraft, and small airlines.
Ordinary consumer headphones have a single 3.5mm plug; while the traditional IFE in-cabin entertainment system of commercial aviation uses the ARINC-628 aviation dual-prong interface, consisting of a large and small plug.
And the impedance of the headphones is divided into two specifications: Type-A (300Ω) and Type-B (40Ω). Incompatibility in impedance will result in low volume, sound distortion, and no sound on one side. Ordinary market headphones that are directly plugged into the aircraft socket often cannot be used normally.
Lightweight design, controllable cost, airlines distribute or sell them on board; the shell and foam need to meet the FAR 25.853 flame-retardant and low-smoke airworthiness material requirements, can be printed with the airline logo, and have simple independent packaging. Mostly used for short-haul routes and low-cost airlines.
Thicker ear pads enhance passive noise reduction, making wearing more comfortable; the wire and shell are durable and resistant to repeated plugging and unplugging, and can be cleaned and disinfected for recycling use. Many long-haul airlines still retain wired headphones as an alternative audio solution besides Bluetooth.

Disposable wired headphones have low procurement costs and are suitable for large-scale distribution in economy class; reusable wired headphones have a long lifespan, simple maintenance, and have a huge price advantage compared to noise-reducing wired cabin headphones. - ✅ Lower certification threshold for airworthiness
Wired headphones only need to meet the material flame-retardant, low-smoke, and non-toxic FAR 25.853 standards; Bluetooth headphones need to pass the radio frequency EMI electromagnetic interference test to avoid affecting the onboard avionics, and the development and certification costs are much higher.
